Early intervention can change a life.
There is no cure for Autism, and children cannot simply
"outgrow" it; however, early intervention can lead to a
significantly improved life. Research now shows that
children as young as a year old can begin showing the
signs of Autism - but it is much more obvious during early
childhood (2 - 6 years).
As a parent, the most important thing you
can do is learn the early signs of Autism. If you have any
concerns regarding your child's development, speak to your
doctor about an Autism screening.
Here are some signs to
look for:
- Lack of or
delay in verbal language
- Little or no eye contact
- Repetitive use of language / motor mannerisms
- Lack of interest in peer relationships
- Lack of make believe / spontaneous play
- Persistent fixation on parts or objects
Five "Red Flags"
(as defined by the Autism Society):
- Baby does not Babble
or Coo by 12 months
- Baby does not Gesture (point, wave, grasp) by 12
months
- Baby does not say single-words by 16 months
- Baby does not say two-word phrases on their own by 24
months
- Baby has any loss of language or social skills at any
age
These "Red Flag" behaviors
do not mean your child has Autism. Instead, they signify
that further evaluation is warranted.
